Severe Winds In DFW

Will They Damage My Roof and Property?

Every year, residents in North Texas expect severe storms. What kind of damage can we expect from severe winds?

The two most common forms of damage are hail and wind. Sometimes, a tornado or two will accompany a severe storm, but those are not nearly as common. Strong winds of 55+ MPH and hail of a quarter inch and larger typically do the most damage to homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

This article will focus on wind damage and help you learn when to schedule wind damage roof repair.

Wind Damage

Like hail, high winds often damage roofs. The type of damage is different, but sometimes it can be enough for homeowner’s insurance to cover a full roof replacement. Once a severe storm reaches winds of 55+ MPH, it has the potential to cause damage. Specifically, shingles that are 3-tab style (which have a lifespan of 20-25 years), have a lower wind rating than 30-year architectural-style shingles. When strong winds come through, some 3-tab shingles may be completely ripped off, which can lead to leaks. Even when they are not completely ripped off, they may be torn away from the fastener. This can also lead to a need for roof leak repair.

Often, roofers will use 3-tab shingles for the ridges on 30-year shingles. This means that most of the roofing will have a higher wind and hail rating, but the ridges will not. This is common practice for new builds as well as roof replacements. It is generally recommended that a professional roofer provide a roof inspection after a wind storm to make sure the entire roof is in good shape. If it is not, the roofer should be able to determine the next steps to take, whether that be a tarp, a repair, or filing an insurance claim.

Severe winds can damage other items on a property as well, including:

  • Trees
  • Backyard items such as lounge chairs and trampolines
  • Fences
  • Windows

Storms with high winds need to be taken seriously. These storms may pass by with no harm done to the property whatsoever, but it is good to know what to expect. Severe weather season lasts from March to June, but there is no calendar month that can be ruled out for strong storms in DFW.

Filing a Hail Damage Claim

A Step-By-Step Expectation Guide

The following is a typical step-by-step guide for those filing a storm-related insurance claim. Each situation may vary slightly.

  1. Call either an Insurance Agent (and have them refer a roofer they trust) or call a trustworthy roofing contractor directly for roof storm damage repair and roof insurance claims help.
  2. Based on the recommendation and photo report provided, decide if filing a claim is the best option – continue to step 3 if it is.
  3. File a claim with the carrier – this can be done via telephone or online portal.
  4. An insurance representative will reach back out with the date and time that an adjuster will arrive.
  5. Tell the roofing contractor the date and time. They should meet the adjuster at the property to compare findings and ensure that nothing is missed.
  6. The adjuster’s inspection takes place. This process usually takes about 45 mins to an hour.
  7. Receive your first check (ACV) and adjuster’s report, sometimes referred to as a “claim summary” or “insurance paperwork”.
  8. Get the check endorsed by the mortgage company (if applicable).
  9. Deposit check – note that there may be a 7–10-day hold.
  10. Review the adjuster’s report with the contractor.
  11. Come to an agreement on the work to be performed, sign a contract, and schedule your repair services.
  12. The contractor applies for a city permit for work to be performed and will ask the insurance company for reimbursement.
  13. The deductible and first check are due by the end of the day after roof replacement – this may be one combined check.
  14. If the contractor notices that the insurance company missed anything, they may supplement, but only for items they perform.
  15. The contractor will send a Completion Certificate to the insurance company.
  16. The insurance company will send the final check but note that it may be divided into two checks – one for final payment and one for supplements.
  17. Once received, the customer will get a check endorsed from the mortgage company if applicable)
  18. The customer deposits the check into their personal account – this may take 7-10 business days.
  19. The customer pays the contractor the outstanding balance.
  20. The contractor sends warranty information.

Reasons Why You Should Repair Your Damaged Roof

Dealing With Roof Damage

The Dallas/Fort Worth area is known for extreme weather conditions such as hail, wind, and even tornado-embedded storms, and can wreak havoc on your home, especially your roof. The roof is the capstone of your home; it not only protects your family but also your home’s interior from danger. And you can’t afford to put off repairs for your damaged roof, as it can save you money in the long run.

So, why should you get your damaged roof repaired as soon as possible? If you’ve been putting off roof repair work, here are some reasons to reassess your home repair priorities.

Roof Damage Worsens, And You May Need New Roofing In The Long Run

No matter how big or small, roof damage needs prompt attention to prevent it from getting worse. So, the more severe the problem, the more expensive it is to fix. If you don’t fix the roof in time, the worst thing that could happen is that you’ll have to replace the roof. Undoubtedly, buying new roofing is more costly than repairing it soon after damage. Kindly do the math.

Roof Leaks Can Cause Mold And Structural Problems

Unattended leaking roofs will almost always cause water damage to your property, which leads to unsafe mold growth and structural difficulties. Mold can make people sick. It also gets into insulation, drywall, and wood, leading to damages that may lead to expensive and time-consuming repairs.

Continuous water exposure puts the structural beams of your home at risk of deterioration. Therefore, unattended degradation could eventually result in the collapse of the roof or interior walls.

Delaying Roof Repair Will Cost You More Money

Another reason for repairing your roof as soon as possible is that the damage will worsen if you wait. The expense of roof repair will, in turn, increase. It will be less costly to correct minor faults than it will be to repair severe damage problems. The money you’re hoping to save by postponing roof repair is insignificant compared to what roofing services will cost you eventually.

Hire A Professional Roofing Contractor To Do The Job For You

Are you in need of roof repair services? Usually, more than 10,000 rogue roofing contractors will try to land roofing repair jobs following such severe weather events. Therefore, consider taking your time and looking for a reputable roofing contractor to receive the best roof repair services and avoid getting defrauded. OneSource Roofing and Restoration is a reliable, honest contractor to help you weather another storm. Kindly contact us today by calling 682-372-7221 to set up a free consultation.

What Are The Signs of a Failing Roof?

Identifying the Need for Roof Replacement

It’s an unfortunate fact that no roof will last forever. This is why it’s important for any homeowner to know what to watch out for when it comes to their roofing system. While it may not always be obvious when a roof replacement is necessary, there are many signs of a bad roof that a homeowner can be aware of. By watching out for these signs, you can hire a roofing professional to take care of the problem before it becomes a far more serious issue. This is something that can help to prevent a number of problems, including damage to your home and your personal possessions. Keeping that in mind, what signs can indicate that you will soon need a roof replacement?

How Do You Know if Your Shingles are Bad?

On average, a shingle roofing system can last for upwards of 20 years. This is important to remember because you should always become aware of possible problems once your shingle roofing system begins to near the end of its lifespan. However, there are many other factors that can speed up the process and force you to schedule a roof replacement sooner than you may expect.

Some problems that may lead to a need for a roof replacement if you have a shingle roofing system include storm damage. Weather such as hail and high wind can damage a shingle roof in a number of ways. For example, heavy hail can cause bruising and may even lead to loose or missing shingles. Meanwhile, high winds can also strip away shingles or even cause damage by allowing debris such as branches to fall onto your roofing system.

One of the biggest indicators that you may need to replace a shingle roof is having a large number of loose or missing shingles. If there are only one or two loose or missing shingles, you will likely only need roof repair services. However, a larger number can indicate a greater underlying problem. The same is true if you have noticed obvious damage to your roofing system. This can include issues such as curling shingles, cupped shingles, or areas that have been cracked or fractured.

Another thing to watch out for is granule loss. Shingles are covered in fine granules, and over time these granules can be washed away from the roof. Watching out for an excessive number of granules in the water that has run off from your roof can be a clear sign that your shingles are in poor condition and that a roof replacement may soon be necessary.

What are Signs of Structural Damage to a Roof?

Having any structural damage to your roofing system is generally a clear sign that you will need a roof replacement. Structural damage can occur to a roof for a number of reasons. One of the most common causes of structural damage is water intrusion into the roofing system, which can occur due to issues such as damage or missing roofing materials. When you experience water intrusion into the underlayment of your roof, that water can lead to further issues such as rotting wood as well as the growth of organic materials such as mold or mildew. This is something that will weaken the underlying structure of your roof and is something that will need to be taken care of right away

Though you should never ignore any kind of problem with your roof, structural damage should always be taken care of immediately. In some cases, structural damage to your roof could even constitute a roofing emergency, in which case you may need to reach out for emergency roof repair services. This is because problems with the structure can lead to issues that are potentially hazardous to your home as well as your family, such as a collapsing roof.

What are the Signs of a Failing Metal Roof?

Generally, a metal roof will last much longer than other types of roofing. You can typically expect a metal roof to last for around 40 to 50 years, and depending on the type of roofing system you have, it may even last longer. However, various factors can lead to the early failure of a metal roofing system, and because of this, it is still important to know the potential signs of a failing metal roof.

One of the biggest signs that a metal roof is in poor condition is corrosion or even rust. For the most part, a metal roof will not experience any kind of rust or corrosion, though it may still be possible due to problems such as the loss of the roof’s protective coating. This may occur due to issues such as water building up on the roof, which can happen for a variety of reasons. For example, water often builds up on a roof due to problems such as clogged gutters, in which case the water has nowhere else to go.

Another thing to remember is that while metal roofing is one of the strongest roofing materials, damage can still occur. Particularly heavy hail can cause a metal roof to experience a number of dents and dings, and issues such as debris dropping onto the roof can cause excessive damage. For the most part, metal roof repair can solve most problems you may experience. However, if the damage to your roof is particularly severe, a roof replacement may still be the better option.

Identifying Problems With Your Roofing System

It is always important to remember that in most cases, it will not be obvious that a roof replacement is necessary. This is what makes it so incredibly important to schedule regular roof inspections. By having a roof inspection done at least once per year, you have the opportunity to identify any problems before they have the chance to become a far bigger concern. Whether you are seeking help with a roof inspection or the time has come for a roof replacement, the OneSource Roofing and Restoration team can be there to help you. We also provide a number of services that can help to keep your roofing system in the best condition possible.

Does a Leaking Roof Need to Be Replaced?

Dealing With a Leaking Roof

Finding a roof leak is never pleasant. It can be a pretty stressful experience for any homeowner due to the amount of damage that even a simple roofing leak can cause. However, one of the most stressful aspects of dealing with a roofing leak is figuring out how you are going to take care of it. Many people are left wondering after identifying a leak in their roof whether or not they will need to schedule a full roof replacement. Fortunately, in the majority of cases, a roof leak will not lead to a roof replacement. However, if you find a leak in your roof, you will need immediate roof leak repair to prevent far bigger problems from arising. Keeping that in mind, it’s important to know how you can identify a roof leak and why it is important to schedule roof leak repair if you’ve noticed a leak in your home’s roofing system.

What Kinds of Problems Can a Roof Leak Cause?

As already mentioned, it’s always important to seek out roof repair services anytime you have noticed a leak in your roof. Roof leaks can damage your home in a number of different ways, and some of the damage that a roof leak can cause may be incredibly expensive to take care of.

One of the most common problems that can arise if a roof has a leak is damage to your home’s ceiling. Some of the more obvious signs that you have a leak are the appearance of water stains on your ceiling, which are areas of discoloration. However, if a leak continues to allow water into your home, far more serious damage can arise. This includes cracks and fractures in your ceiling, which will need to be taken care of immediately. Meanwhile, another similar problem that can arise if you have a roofing leak is stains or damage to your home’s walls or even your flooring.

Water intrusion into your home also has the potential to cause damage to materials such as your home’s insulation. Along with being expensive to take care of, this kind of problem can lead to further issues such as higher energy bills. This is because damaged insulation will cause air to escape your home while also allowing air into your home, which can make it more difficult to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

It is also important to remember that not all of the damage caused by a roofing leak will be immediately noticeable. This is especially true when most of the water intrusion is into the underlayment of your roofing system. When this occurs, you may experience problems such as structural damage to your roof. This damage can be a particularly serious problem as it can lead to issues such as the collapse of your roofing system if it is left unchecked.

Finally, every homeowner should remember the additional problems that a roofing leak can cause. Along with immediate damage to your home itself, water intrusion can cause damage to your personal property. This has the potential to cause expensive property loss as well as the loss of property that has sentimental value. You may even experience issues such as the growth of mold and mildew or the appearance of pests in your home. These are problems that can be health hazards in addition to being able to cause significant damage.

What are the Signs of a Leaking Roof?

As already mentioned, one of the most obvious signs of a potential roofing leak is the appearance of water stains on the ceiling as well as along the top of your walls. It is also a wise idea to watch out for any damage that a leaking roof may be causing.

Some other things you can watch out for that can indicate a leaking roof include damage to the roof itself. By regularly inspecting your roofing system, you can see issues such as loose or missing shingles, cracks in your roofing material, or the growth of organic materials such as mold and mildew on your roof’s exterior. Often, this will allow you to identify a roofing leak early on so you can get it taken care of right away so it does not become a far bigger issue.

If you are not certain that you have a leaking roof but you suspect it may be possible, reaching out to a professional roofer will ensure you get the help you need. A roofer will be able to conduct a roof inspection, during which they can identify whether a roof has a leak along with identifying the source of the leak. From there, you will be able to schedule a roof leak repair to take care of the problem and ensure that it does not cause any further damage.

What Can Lead to a Leaking Roof?

One of the final things any homeowner should keep in mind is the kind of problems that can lead to a leaking roof. Some of the more obvious problems that can cause a roof to leak are issues such as damage to the roof or missing roofing materials. However, not all problems will be immediately identifiable.

Various other problems can cause a roof to leak. This includes issues such as damage to the roof flashing, a build-up of leaves or other debris in your roof’s gutters, or the improper installation of your roofing materials in the first place. A roof leak also has the potential to appear after a heavy storm, especially if you have seen a large amount of hail damage to the roof or if you’re in need of wind damage roof repair due to roofing material that has been torn away or even debris such as tree limbs that have fallen onto your roof.
